This was a mystery tour organised by our hosts Cardiff Morris. None of us knew the destinations we would be visiting and apparently it’s a Cardiff tradition. It started at the big Coryton roundabout where we were picked up for the coach ride up the valley north of Cardiff, and we were dropped off in Aberdare town centre. We were a little thin on the ground having just 7 dancers and Kev and Roger as musicians as Sian could not make this event. Carreg Las were also on the tour along with Cardiff and both these sides looked healthier than they have been for a long time, especially Cardiff who were able to put up two sets of Y Gaseg Eira! We were able to dance reasonably well and were grateful that we were doing dances along with the other two sides. We were never going to get tired!
Our lunch spot after the first dance spot was to have been a splendid real ale pub located along a narrow mountain road near Llanwonno. Sadly, the coach driver said it would be impossible to get the coach to the pub, so we were taken instead to the Yr Ieuan ap Iago pub in Aberdare which is a Wetherspoons pub. They certainly had plenty of ales and in fairness, it was all very drinkable and the food was good too. We were able to dance inside the pub as it had come on to rain and we all gave a dance each with us doing Speed the Plough. We next drove to The Glyntaff Inn at Quakers Yard where we were able to socialise and dance more in a relaxed way with Cardiff and Carreg Las. The pub itself was very good and the ale was Evan Evans, and also Rhymney, which were very quaffable. Fortunately, the weather held good for us to dance the afternoon away until we were back on the coach for the half hour drive back to Cardiff. This was a very good day out in good company. Must go to it next year if we are invited! Photos by Paul & Alison.
